What’s New

Play A Thon Important Info!

The countdown is officially on! Play-A-Thon is Friday, October 2 from 4:00–9:30pm, and planning is in full swing.

For our new families, Play-A-Thon is our biggest fundraiser of the year — and one of our favorite Cleveland Bands traditions. It’s an old-school telethon-style concert, with our bands performing for hours while our community comes together to support the program, and we stream it to your friends and family around the world.

But an event this big takes a village! We need lots of volunteers to help keep things running smoothly throughout the evening — everything from keeping an eye on the halls and helping with food to supporting the livestream and keeping the whole operation organized. Check out the volunteer sign up page here with more information and get involved!

We’re also still especially interested in finding someone who is technically inclined and willing to be a technical shadow for the event. This is a great opportunity to learn the ropes this year and potentially take on more of the role in future years.

Cleveland Bands will be hosting 8th graders from Hosford, Brentwood, and Sellwood as they participate in our upcoming pep band during the football game.

We’re looking for volunteers to help serve pizza during their visit.

This is a fun activity and a great way to meet other band parents.

Pep Band Reminders: A Few Important Things

Pep Band is for everyone in Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, and Percussion Ensemble. These performances are part of the band program and are not optional events. Any conflicts should be communicated in advance to Mr. Riler, and you can make arrangements to make up the time — 3 hours for a football game and 1.5 hours for a basketball game. Mr. Riler will work with students to determine the best way to make up those hours.

A few practical reminders as we head into game nights:

Attire: Jeans and a Pep Band shirt – green if you haven’t gotten yours yet.
Eat before sectionals: There aren’t really breaks long enough to make your way through the concession lines.
Running late? Come as soon as you can. An adult will be at the music wing doors until 6:45pm. Students arriving after that should bring their instrument with them.
Bring a sweatshirt!
End-of-game pickup: Games don’t have a set end time, so please stay in communication with your student about when the game is wrapping up.

Thanks to everyone for helping our students be prepared, fed, warm, and ready to make some noise! Pep Band is one of the best ways our students get to be part of the larger Cleveland community, and we love seeing them out there supporting our teams!

We need a Dine Out Lead!

Dine-outs are  community events where local restaurants donate a percentage of their sales from a specific day to our Cleveland Bands. This provides funding that is integral to the band program. We are seeking a volunteer to lead our efforts in these fundraisers.

Key responsibilities:

  • Schedule dine-out events
  • Research and coordinate new opportunities
  • Work with Communication Coordinator to advertise upcoming events

Parent Meeting Recap

It was great to see so many parents last week at the All Parent meeting! We gathered in the new performing arts space and talked it out. We covered Pep Band vs Marching Band, practice books and assessments, attendance and extra lessons, an introduction to the Friends of Cleveland Band, and a band room tour!

If you weren’t able to make it, no need to fret! We’ve got you covered with the

Band Handbook

This is your key to knowing everything (except the performance dates!) This document has all of the information you could want, including where to rent instruments, what to wear for concerts, practice and performance expectations, grading, additional supplies and so much more.  Once you have perused it thoroughly, please take a moment to fill out this acknowledgement form (it hits all the points you need to know).

Reach out to Mr Riler with any questions and if you haven’t already Subscribe to the Calendar!
