Philosophy

Music education is beneficial to all students. It provides enjoyment and opportunities to develop a variety of skills. Music study can improve a student’s self-discipline, thinking and listening skills, coordination, self-esteem, creativeness and self- expression. Music provides opportunities for teamwork, instills pride and lifetime skills and a sense of personal accomplishment. Involvement in music stimulates brain activity and positively impacts students in other areas of academia. Music is art, science, language and math. Music is kinesthetic, visual and auditory. Music study promotes the development of well-rounded successful individuals who positively contribute to society.

Practice is where you learn your part. Rehearsal is where you learn
everyone else’s part.

Individual Practice vs. Rehearsal
Students are expected to practice their instruments outside of band rehearsal.  Individual practice time should be included in a student’s “homework time” at home, and there should be a space set aside away from distractions (computer, television, phone, etc.) in which the student can learn their music.  There is no “set amount of time students should practice.”  A good musician will practice their music until they get it right, while a great musician will practice their music until they can’t get it wrong.

Responsibilities of Cleveland HS Band Department
A proper rehearsal atmosphere will be provided for the student musicians. Mr. Riler will see that all aspects of the administration of the music department will conform to the policies of the school, the district, and Oregon Music Educators Association and the OSAA. Students and parents will be provided with rehearsal dates, performance dates, and all other special dates well in advance (typically 2 or more weeks) of the scheduled events.

Responsibilities of the Cleveland HS Student Musician
Participation in the music department is a privilege which carries with it certain responsibilities. A member should be regular in attendance and account for all absences. A member should endeavor to improve performance on his or her instrument. A member should strive to have a proper attitude of pride, cooperation and a willingness to work.  A member should be respectful of other members and faculty.  Successful completion of one year of instrumental music will result in the student earning one Fine Arts Credit toward graduation.

Responsibilities of the Cleveland HS Band Parent
Parents can be most helpful by encouraging home practice, as well as reminding the student to have proper equipment that is always clean and in good repair.  Parents should assist the student by making sure that transportation is provided to and from functions, and by helping to see that the student is punctual.  Parents also may help by notifying the director of any absences or tardiness that would affect the student’s participation.
